NEW DELHI: GSM industry body Cellular Operators Association of India has slammed the government’s decision to continue charging a 1 per cent spectrum usage charge (SUC) for broadband wireless access ( BWA) spectrum which can be used to provide 4G services.
“A uniform SUC for all operators offering voice, video and data services in the country should be implemented, as suggested by the telecom regulator. Although the suggested move could benefit the telecom operators marginally, serious issues still remain unanswered,” COAI said on Monday.
The telecom regulator had sought a flat SUC which it said would address anomalies in the sector while creating a level playing field. According to Trai, the current policy of escalating charges penalises larger operators and discourages consolidation of the industry.
