Government plans new car safety norms in 3 months

NEW DELHI: The government plans to finalise a new set of minimum safety standards for passenger vehicles and a New Car Assessment Programme within a month, after some popular cars in the country failed safety tests done in Europe.

The ministry of road transport and highways plans to notify the new norms to all stakeholders in about three months and then make changes in the existing regulations after getting their feedback.

“We plan to notify a roadmap of sorts on the new specifications with prospective effect in about three months,” an official said. “The changes will be made with department of heavy industries’ consensus and feedback on the increase in costs for automobile manufacturers.” Read more
