States may challenge power regulator’s order to compensate Tatas, Adanis for costly coal

CERC directed power utilities of 5 states to compensate Tata Power and Adani Power for their losses incurred due to expensive Indonesian coal. NEW DELHI: Narendra Modi’s Gujarat government and other states may challenge the landmark regulatory order asking them to pay for higher cost of imported coal used by Tata Power and Adani Power, but industry executives said the verdict was fair and would help consumers also.

After Saturday’s order by Central Electricity Regulatory Commission (CERC), state officials are assessing the implications as the Modi government has won accolades from industry leaders for its business-friendly policies, but it also does not want to be seen to be supporting higher tariffs, particularly in an election year.  Read more
